Original Park Shrimp Tubes and Coneheads
There is only one place to get original Park Shrimps and that is from the man that designed it, Ross Macdonald.
The Park Shrimp is a deadly modern shrimp fly, which takes fish from opening day to the end of the season. Its strong profile and incredible mobility in the water create an irresistible combination for fresh fish. Designed by Ross in 2007 the ‘Parky’, as it affectionately known, has taken fish throughout the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Russia. It is a must ‘have pattern’ for every fly box.

Heather’s Shrimp is one of my variants of the Park Shrimp and was first tied around 2008. I wanted to add something with a cold, clear water feel and with a nod to the Green Highlander. Plus, after naming flies after my children, it seemed only fair to have one named in honour of their mum.
It is a clear water pattern and the tubes and coneheads are ideal for the cold waters of early spring and autumn.

Original Calvin’s Shrimp Tubes and Coneheads
There is only one place to get original Calvin’s Shrimps and that is from the man that designed it, Ross Macdonald.
Calvin’s Shrimp, has the same profile and superb mobility of the Park Shrimp. Its unique blend of colours combines orange, red and magenta to deadly effect. It very much a fly for peat stained rivers, but will take fish anywhere and is hugely attractive to springers, grilse and late running fish. Designed by Ross in 2009 and named after his son, the Calvin’s Shrimp has become a hugely popular addition to the Macdonald Salmon Fly collection.

The Tosh is the the standard spring tube for early season in Scotland. It is a very simple black and yellow bucktail fly, which has an incredible success rate. Unsurprisingly, it remains a firm favourite with many anglers in search of the first springer of the season. Don’t leave home without one!

The Willie Gunn is the quintessential Scottish spring fly. This gold bodied version is very popular tese days. I dress the wing longer than the standard dressing and have added a little flash to the wing.

NEW FOR 2015!
Black, yellow and silver is a killing combination for springers and grilse. Maggie’s Shrimp was created around the same time as the Park Shrimp and is now available to buy for the 2015 season. Maggie’s fishes well in the cold clear waters of spring when it is dressed on tubes and coneheads. As the season progresses it is very effective on doubles . The pattern is named after my friend Ken Reid’s late wife.

The Pot Belly Pig is a firm favourite and this version tied by my late father is a small lightly dressed version that can be deadly for running fish. He liked them small generally fished it off a floater with a short tip, perhaps with a couple of mends at the start to let it sink a little, before being swung over the lies . I have seen him take springers off the Lochy, Spey and Thurso with this set up and have managed a couple off the Dee myself.

NEW FOR 2015!
This is my late father’s pattern which he devised, taking element of a number of classic spring patterns including the Garry Dog, Fast Eddie and Willie Gunn. We took a few springers together on this fly and he landed his last fish on it from the Thurso’s Sauce Pool. I also like it Scandi style on short brass tubes. It also works well on doubles later in the spring into summer. Green is not a common colour in Scotland, so it certainly something different to add to the mix!

Mairi’s Shrimp is a very effective fly in a wide range of conditions. It fishes well in peat stained water and in clearer water on overcast days. It is a deadly back end pattern too. It is the first shrimp that I designed and is the template for the Park Shrimp and Calvin’s Shrimp. Claret is not a common colour choice in Scotland, but I promise that it works like a charm.

I couldnt resist turning this famous Swedish pattern, by Mikael Andersson, into a shrimp fly. The dirty yellow colouration is perfect for peaty water and also for clear water on a bright day.

John Cathcarts classic shrimp pattern has caught countless salmon since the 1960s. It hails from the River Ness and is one of the most enduring and productive patterns of the past 50 years. It excels in clear water.

A gem from the Ness.
Graham Mackenzie’s marrying of the silver stoat and shrimp fly is a modern classic, which excels as a clear water pattern for salmon and grilse on the floating line. It works particularly well in smaller sizes.

The Monkey is one of the most popular spring flies of recent times and dominates early season catches. As night follows day, patterns evolve and variants emerge; its all part of the fun of fly tying. This is a variant created by my pal Donnie Whiteford, who based it on the Orange Rapala. Donnie and Dundee fly tyer, Alan Greene, have landed many springers on this fly and its destined to be an early season standard.

The Lochy Shrimp emerged from a conversation I had with River Lochy Manager, John Veitch. John and I discussed what a ‘Lochy fly’ might look like and after agreeing on blue, yellow, silver and black, this is what I came up with. This exciting new pattern is ideal for clear water and bright summer days.

The Snaelda has been carried around the world by Icelandic Salmon fishers. It is very useful as a heavy water fly and for provoking difficult fish that won’t come far for a fly. The one shown is dressed on a brass tube with a cone which adds a tremendous action to the fly as it swims.
